Grapetooth – the bombastic Chicago-based duo of Clay Frankel (Twin Peaks) and Chris Bailoni (Home-Sick) – return and share “Infinite Source” b/w “Shining.” The two are not strangers to crafting huge hooks. Their 2018 self-titled debut was an instant classic, resulting in resounding praise from Rolling Stone, Vice, Paste, Uproxx, FLOOD, and more. Their rambunctious, high-energy live sets were a buzzed-about spectacle, leading to sold out shows across the US, as well as a rowdy appearance at Pitchfork Music Festival in 2019. After that whirlwind of excitement and success, the band briefly hung it up, leaving fans wondering when they might get something new from the dynamic duo. Today’s new double single signals a return and introduces a new more introspective sound, but the vibes are undeniably Grapetooth.
“Infinite Source” b/w “Shining” is Grapetooth’s first release since 2020’s “Fantasy Movie” single, which featured fellow Chicagoan Lala Lala. “Infinite Source” features friend and collaborator Knox Fortune, while “Shining” finds Frankel and Bailoni enlisting label-mate Ella Williams of Squirrel Flower for a beautiful vocal performance that highlights the melodic hooks Grapetooth have become known for.
“Infinite Source” starts with blissful synth and piano, the pace picking up with a layer of high-pitched vocals: “I’m too tough // knock me down // I get back up // I’m too tough // break my heart // ain’t enough.” The accompanying video was directed by Jackson James and produced by Weird Life Films (a frequent Twin Peaks collaborator). “‘Infinite Source’ is the endless well of creativity, gratitude, and positivity that exists within all of us,” explains the band. “We’re turning that feeling into dance music and feel blessed to have Ella (Squirrel Flower) and Kevin (Knox Fortune) singing on these songs. They’re both so talented and have incredible voices. The songs wouldn’t be what they are without them!”
