VirgoTwins — the West-Coast-by-way-of-Chicago duo composed of MC Gilead7 (of Chicago hip-hop collective Tomorrow Kings) and producer Boricua Sandy — present their new single/video, “Othello’s Children in the ‘New World’,” from their forthcoming debut album, ArtSpace, out April 21st on Damn That Noise/Expanded-Art Records. In “Othello’s Children in the ‘New World’,” named after the text by Moorish scholar José Pimient-Bey, the VirgoTwins tear through the facades the current order of the world are built on. Over a menacing acidic and bassy track by Boricua Sandy, Gilead plays two roles: that of a tenured university professor who tries to keep hidden the most hideous skeletons of the colonial past, as well as a tenure track faculty member who wants to reveal what has been shrouded in the Masonic lodges of Harvard University. The accompanying video, directed by Kory Stewart and starring Defcee and Rich Jones, is a cinematic translation of the track’s rich backstory.

In the spirit of the introspective Virgo, ArtSpace is a ten-song meditation reminiscent of underground hip-hop during the early 2000s. Composed of Chicago-born/West Coast-based MC Gilead7 and San Diego-based underground producer Boricua Sandy, the two September-born artists met in the Southern California underground scene after years of knowing each other peripherally and discovering a shared love for the essence of the culture. ArtSpace is a sonic imagination where creativity is never concluded but always ongoing, malleable, and multiplicitous. Across its ten tracks, Sandy, known for her exceptional and tireless work in the San Diego underground where she spearheads events with the likes of Roc Marciano, 2MEX, and beyond, lays down lush and intelligent instrumental production. Gilead7, a member of the infamous Chicago hip-hop collective Tomorrow Kings and long-time solo artist, delivers thoughtful and fluid bars on the various interpretations and possibilities of how we can live in and think about the world more progressively.
